It was like any other typical afternoon. The weather was scorching hot and beads of perspiration trickled down my forehead. I was in my room, hogging onto the computer as my PSLE was just over.

"Game over! Restart again?" flashed my computer screen.

"Oh! Come on! Stupid game!" I chided, banging loud onto the table so violently that the table shook, like earthquake! Just then, my mother entered my room.

"Not again!" I thought, thinking that she was about to ask me to switch off the computer and do homework!

"Mum! PSLE is over! Can't I take a break eh?" I inquired.

But she didn't ask me to switch it off. She asked me to run an errand for her, which was equally bad. I just hated running errands.

"Alison, can you run down to the supermarket to the grocery-shopping for me please?" asked mun, with a broad grin on her face, "here's the list and you may buy some sweets or ice-cream if you want."

"Aw! What a hot day," I thought,"I don't think I will bulge even if I am offerred abalone or shark fin!"

I amde my way to the supermarket and grabbed a basket. It was more like a wet market to me. With wet floors and it smelt like toilet! Housewives were doing their grocery-shopping and it was packed! With people, like sardines in a can. I headed to the sections with difficulty and grabbed any stuffs in view-those needed by my mum.

"Frozen beef," I read from my list. It was at the bottom of the shopping list, right down! I yelped in delight as I could leave the hot, stuffy supermarket soon. Finally!

I was queing uo at the check-out counter when someone from behind gave a sudden, hard push. I fell onto the ground, with groceries strewn all over the floor. I was fuming with anger. Picking myself and the groceries up, I turned around, ready to give the culprit a sound scolding.

Ah! Shock robbed me of speech! It was unbelievable! The person who pushed me was an old, wizened man in his sixties. He was panting and gasping for breath. I thought it must be some Ah Bengs. Seeing the apologetic look on his face, my anger subsided. In a concern voice, I asked if he was hurt and also for the matter.

"Girl, did you see a young, burly man with hazel-coloured hair and pierced ears?" he inquired. I took me a moment to realise that he was robbed.

We instantly looked around and saw a lady chasing after a fleeing man, who was grabing a purse, a man's purse. I immediately sussed out that his purse was snatched.

"Thief! thief! Stop the thief!"I screeched, on the top of my voice. Curious shoppers glanced at me. Then, they realised what's going on. They sprinted as fast as cheetahs but failed to caught hold of him. He had run too fast.

"Crash! Bomb!" lots of noises. Throwing stuffs at view, he wished to block our way to get away scot-free but too bad. We managed to jump across it.

Just then, we stumbled upon two policemen, patroling the area. They were right in front of the culprit while we were behind him. There was no way out! The culprit surrendered to the police and returned the purse.

"Disgrace! What a disgrace!" shrieked a young woman. She was trowing carton boxes at him.

What a relistic scene! The culprit was the Singapore Idol runner-up, Sylvester Sim and the woman was the Singapore Idol contestant and his ex-girlfriend, Maia Lee! :D

Finally found that Drowning picture

Drowing!

The high sunlit clouds drifted across the clear blue sky. Waves crashed against the sandy shore before ebbing away.Coconut trees swayed to the gentle breeze of the warm tropical sunshine. I was at the beach with my brother.

"Help me!Help!" an ear-piercing scream filled the air. We turned around and saw a boy, about ten, struggling to stay afloat. His face was pale and was screaming incoherently.

"Quick! Grab the coconut that is floating by!"shouted a boy.

"Are you mad? the coconut is so small. He should grab a trunk of the coconut tree. Here boy! There is one, grab it..."shouted another boy.

The on-lookers were shouting at the top of their voices and giving loads of suggestions to the boy but no one dared to save him from the strong currents of the waves.

"A heap of cowards!"thought my brother,"So busy shouting that they don't even know what should they do..."

Just then, a burly man, who was as fit as a fiddle, dived into the sea and saved the boy, who was still struggling frantically to stay afloat. He grabbed the boy and dragged him to the shore, with the "help" of the waves, pushing them towards the shore.

He laid the boy in an inclined position and do Cadio Pulmonary Resuscitation, forcing sea water out of his lungs. He was accidently jerked and he came to, splitting out seawater. The boy experience a feeling of weakness and blacked-out.

"Brother! Brother! Wake up please! You musn't die..."shouted a boy, pushing his body hardly.

The crowd adviced him to calm down but he couldn't. Maybe, they were very close.

Soon, the wailings of the sirens could be heard. Taking that someone had the initiative to call the ambulance, we heaved a sign of relief. The paramedics carried the blacked-out boy on the stretcher and left for the hospital.

The loud wailings soon died down. Since we had no mood to enjoy at the beach, we left, with a broad grin on our faces.

Week 1 Compo:

One afternoon, I returned home from school. I saw two men standing in front of my neighbour's flat. One of them was struggling with the door. "Hmm.., they don't look friendly. They can't be Uncle Bruce's friends," I thought, burning with curiosity, "But who exactly are they?..." I walked away, as if nothing has happened.

Minutes later, when I was doing my homework, I heard noises coming from from my neighbour, Uncle Bruce's flat. Being a regular busybody, I crept towards the door to Uncle Bruce's flat. However, the door was unbolted! "Something's wrong." I thought worriedly... As my mother was a bit of a nosy parker, she knew almost everything in the neighborhood. Between our neighbor, Aunt Anna, and her, they always manage to ferret out all the current neighborhood gossip. Mum has an unerring nose for gossip, and her sharp inquisitive eyes miss nothing. That is how we knew that Uncle Bruce was away for a few days on a business trip...

"That's strange!" I mused. "Uncle Bruce's front door is open! Could he have come home early?" I thought to myself. Brusting with curiosity, I peered through the narrow opening of the door and got the shock of my life - those two men that I saw outside the door just now, were rifling through Uncle Bruce's chest of drawers. It's a burglary! Almost immediatlely, I took out my handphone and phoned the police.

I continued spying on them, watching them scurrying in and out fetching jewellery. I crept towards the bedroom once I got into the house. "Bang!" Oops! I had accidentally kicked the dustbin which was just beside me a moment ago. "Who's there?!" a thunderous voice boomed across the living room. I stifled a scream and held my breath in terror, praying that the burglars would not find me here. "Stomp! Stomp!" I hear footsteps! And it's coming from behind me! I turned around, only to see one of the burglars holding a baseball bat, ready to hit me. "Thud!" a dull thud was heard as I fell on the floor.

"Bang!" The door was broken down. "Hands up!" a man in blue shouted. I knew that the police had arrived. "Haha..." I laughed with an evil grin. as I saw them being handcuffed away, I slipped into darkness... ...

I came to after a few minutes. I had a large painful bump on my head, but was otherwise all right. "You have awaken?" A nurse, who was checking something attached to a clipboard. "After the police leave, you may be discharged." She said with concern, and left as soon as the police came in. "Mister, we would like to ask some questions regarding the burglary. Please co-operate with us..." and when they had finished asking, they left, while I was discharged immediately.

A few days later, Uncle Bruce came back. He even rewarded me with $100 for stopping the burglary! And guess what? I was given a medal for bravery by the police too! What a surprise! It's sure nice to help a neighbour in need.., you know what I mean?... ...

Week 2 Compo:

It was my first week working as a lifeguard. On that fateful day, I saved the first ever person in my whole life, and I'm proud of it. Let me tell you my story...

On that day, the beach was crowded with campers who had set up tents along the shore. Delicious smells of barbecued seafood wafted through the air. Some childern were playing beach volleyball and others were building sandcastles. The long stretch of sandy beach was lined with coconut and palm trees. Umbrellas dotted the beach, providing shelter from the midday sun. The nearby retaurants did brisk business. I was walking towards my post after my lunch break. Everything seemed to be in place when suddenly, I heard a terrifying scream... ...

"Help! Somebody, please save my son!" a woman in her forties screamed, with tears streaming from her eyes. Upon hearing this, I knew that I'm the only one who save the boy. After all, I'm a qualified lifeguard. I scanned the deep, blue sea for the boy, hoping to see some signs of struggle if I cannot see him. Suddenly, I spotted a boy struggling about a hundred metres from the shore.

"Hold on, I'm coming!" I yelled, plunging headfirst into the icy, cold water. I shivered as I swam towards the drowning child, the water was too cold! I swam with alll my might towards the boy, hoping to reach him before he was swallowed by the waves. Onlookers on the shore were now wearing worried and anxious looks on their faces. "Help!" the drowning boy shouted, trashing wildly in the water. "Save me!" he gasped between great gulps of salty water when he saw me. "Hang on!" I shouted. As the water closed over him, he blacked out. I swam towards him with powerful strokes, finally reaching him. I caught hold of the boy and managed to drag him to the surface of the water and swam back to shore.

Suddenly, I froze. I realised I had a cramp in my right leg. Now, I was the one struggling. I knew I had to get the both of us to shore somehow. There were still at least twelve metres from shore, and now I had a cramp in my right leg. What luck! I swam and swam, swallowing big mouths of the salty sea water at the same time. "Only a few more metres... to go... ..." I thought to myself, with life slowly draining from me...

After what seemed like an eternity, the both of us finally reached the shore. I started adminstering CPR to the boy, desperately hoping that the boy would wake up any moment now. A moment later, the boy had awaken. His mother gave an audible sigh of relief when she saw her son manage to sit up weakly. "Thank God you are safe!" she said, exhaling in relief. The boy's mother turned to me and begun thanking me profusely. "It's nothing..." Before I could finished my sentence, I blacked out.

When I came to, I realised I was in the hospital. "Oh, you are awake?" a doctor with a name tag bearing the name 'Dr. Justice' asked. Doctor Justice realised I was staring at his name tag. "Sorry, it's just that your name is weird." I apologised quickly. "Never mind. Just to let you konw, you fainted out of exhaustion. And the boy you saved had completely recovered from the ordeal." Doctor Justice said, "Since you have awaken, you may be discharged." And after visiting the boy and his mother, who thanked me profusely again, I left the hospital.

However, thinking back, I began to doubt whether I'm suitable to be a lifeguard. This kind of situation might happen again.., anytime in the future... What do you think?... ...

Week 3 Compo:

"You're here! Finally, too." a man in his forties exclaimed. "Ahh, Mr. Steven. Nice to meet you!" I replied in English, looking at my surroundings. Almost everyone is seated at their seats in the theatre, awaiting for the movie to start. What am I talking about, you asked. Well, I'm Tanaka Yamaguchi, an action star, and I'm at my first movie's premiere... Three hours later, the show had ended. Thunderous applause was heard right after the show. "Congrulations! Mr. Tanaka, it seems that your hard work has paid off!" Mr. Steven, the director, said through tears of joy. Memories of the past events begun unfolding before me...

The blue sky was dotted with fluffy white clouds that drifted lazily in the gentle breeze. The roads shimmered in the heat of the midday sun. The sunlit skyscrapers piecred the hot, blue sky. I was sitting beside the TV crew in the van, which was travelling along the expressway to the airport. "Tanaka, it's take 30 today, the part where you fight against the robber. Do you need me to go through the lines with you?" my personal assistant, Youko, asked. "Yes, and I need to rehearse my steps there too." I replied feverishly. Take 30 was the climax of the story, and the turning point of my career... ...

Soon, we reached the airport. I was told to stay in the vehicle while they set up the equipments needed. "Bang!" a loud knock was heard. I turned to look outside the window. I was astounded to see teenage girls holding boards with my name on it. "Tanaka, it's time to go." Youko said in excitement, opening the door of the van. Once outside, I was escorted by bodyguards to the scene.

A ripple of excitement ran through the crowd as I entered the airport. There were many fans of mine already here, waiting for me. Some of the most ardent fans were almost delirious with exciement. A whirl of excitement followed me wherever I went. "Ready? 3, 2, 1, ACTION!" Mr. Steven shouted. "Help! My handbag! Help!" a female supporting actress, all dressed up as an old woman, screamed, chasing a man in casual clothes wearing a pair of sunglasses. "Tanaka, you are up next, right after the next line." the director reminded me. "Somebody, please help me!" the 'old' lady cried out in despair. A surge of excitement ran through the spectators as I ran towards the 'robber'. "Wham! Bang! Crash!" I 'pretended' to have a struggle with the 'robber' in order to retrieve the handbag.

"Take this! Shame on you, fancy bullying an old defenceless woman!" I said as I delivered the finishing blow. The 'robber' fled, leaving the handbag behind. "Here you go." I said calmly, awaiting for the next act, according to the script. "Are you blind?! How dare you call me an old woman!" the actress screeched in a furious tone. And with that, she stormed off, leaving behind a puzzled-looking me. "Cut! Well done! It's only the first take, and it's perfect!" Mr. Steven said with a happy grin. My keyed-up fans cheered boisterourly as the act ended. Upon seeing this, I decided to repay them by agreeing to pose for photographs and giving them autographs.

About five minutes later, I was escorted back to the van... ..."Tanaka! Tanaka!" Mr. Steven shouted, shaking me. "What?!" I replied, having just came back to my senses."What's on your mind?" He asked, almost bursting with curiosity. "Nothing serious. Just some old memories." I repiled hastily............

The sun’s rays filtered into my window. I woke up feeling refreshed. As usual, I went down to my flat’s void deck to check my letterbox. I noticed a bright green envelope with a picture of a Boeing 747 passenger aeroplane on it. I hurriedly ripped the envelope open and found out that I had won a free flight to Japan!
I zoomed back home and started packing my luggage. The plane was leaving two days later. I stuffed clothes, extra clothes, my passport, air ticket, water bottle, extra water bottle and most importantly, my digital camera, all into a small luggage bag.
The day had finally come. I drove to Changi Airport and reached there just in time. Soon, I was cuddling comfortably into a window in the 747. The next thing I knew, the plane was off for Japan.
Seven hours later, the plane touched down in Japan Airport and I headed for Arrival Hall 2. I sat down on a bench to rest for a while. As I sat down, I noticed a man dressed in black in black behaving suspiciously. He was loitering around an old lady and eyeing her handbag. I started to feel uneasy. Was I to help or just mind my own business? After all, I was in a foreign country.
The man started moving closer and closer to the old lady. He reached out his hand and in a flash, he ran off with the old lady’s handbag. The lady screamed. This sent me darting towards the man. He noticed me and turned around, trying to communicate with me in Japanese. I could not understand him but whatever he was trying to say, I had to catch him as he was a pickpocket.
Just then, the old lady came up to me and literally pulled the handbag off the man’s hand. Furthermore, the man was even laughing! What the…? I thought to myself. Then something caught my eyes. At a corner of the arrival hall were lightings, a television crew and a television camera pointing my way! That explained everything! They were shooting a movie! I let go of the man. I felt extremely embarrassed. I had humiliated myself in front of throngs of people. I was momentarily dumbfounded. Well, what could I say? I do not speak Japanese! I ran off as fast as my legs could carry me.
Back home in Singapore, I sat in front of my computer, typing an email for my best friend to tell him about my embarrassing experience. Wait! Tell him about it and let him laugh at me and worse, spread the ‘news’ around? I shut down the computer. I would rather this stay a secret!

I sauntered around Arrival Hall 2. Occasionally, I looked through the glass panels, giving people the impression that I was waiting for someone. The red leather handbag an elderly lady was holding did not escape my attention. My eyes darted hither and thither, as I looked around. Making sure that the coast was clear, I fastened my pace as I walked towards the elderly lady. As swift as wind, I grabbed her handbag and ran away like a bolt of lightening. I ran and ran and ran, the old lady shouting in Hokkien behind.
Suddenly, I felt someone pounce on me and twisted my arm. Looking back to see who was it, I was shock to see someone I did not know. That guy was not suppose to pounce on me, I do not even know who he is! It was suppose to be some guy who played the good guy. It was in the script. I was suppose to run and the “good guy” would pounce on me.
“Hey! Let go of him. There is a shoot going on here. He is not a snatch thief! Sorry, but we still have a scene to shoot so let go of him now.” said Mike, the assistant, as he ran towards the man and I.
“You mean, there…is a shoot going on here? He is not a snatch thief? But, but…” the man asked, his voice trailing off. His face turned beetroot with embarrassment. By now, a small crowd had formed and the director and actors were running over. People were looking and pointing at him. The director started explaining things to the man while I massaged arm. It was so painful!
After apologizing to the cast, the man left hurriedly and we went back to shoot the scene again. I checked that my clothes were not crumpled and everything was in place when we got back.
“Scene three, take two and action!” shouted the director. Getting the cue, I sauntered into Arrival Hall 2 and looked through the glass panels occasionally…
Finally, after two long hours, we finished all the scenes in the airport. To celebrate, the director treated us to drinks. I had a wonderful day that day.
What an unforgettable day for me!

Sorry for the late work!

Week 3's Compo: A misunderstanding
"Janis, do sleep early. We are leaving tomorrow at seven o'clock sharp,"announced dad.

I had forgotten! We were in China for our two-week
vacation and it was the last day, the last night in China. We were going to pack up and go tomorrow. Thinking of that made me feel reluctant as school was re-opening a week after. How I wished time passed ever so slowly that one minute equals to one day. Tears welled up my eyes.

We packed our belongings in our luggages and set our alarm before we went to bed. We were dog-tired after a hard day and ended up sleeping like logs.

"Ring! Ring!" goes the alarm. Us, except dad, slept right through the alarm. He lept out of bed and took a peep at the alarm when he woke us up.

"Girls! Wake up! Time to get going!" he exclaimed. We, too, peeped at our watches and discovered that it was indeed time for us to pack and go. We checked that we had all our stuffs ready at hand before we checked out of the hotel. Before we left, we had breakfast at the hotel's restaurant to have our breakfast.

We took a cab to the airport and checked in. Meanwhile, mum shopped for souveniers before boarding the plane.

"Singapore Airlines flight Sq806, from China, to Singapore, is ready for boarding now..."announced a voice over a speaker. Instantly, we knew our flight was ready for boarding now and headed towards the boarding gate to board it.

I played computer games while dad and mum read magazines. We also chatted about varieties of stuffs-our holidays, what we do, how we feel, etc. Chatting killed time and we soon discovered that we had arrived.

Out of blue, a feeling of reluctance over-whelmed me. I didn't feel like going to school as I was enrolled in a new class without the accompany by my friends. I thought I would be lonely all year but I still managed to crack a smile, a forced smile.

On our way to the arrival hall, shock engulfed me. A man, wearing sunglasses, grabbed the handbag of an old lady and fled. The old lady was shouting and chasing him, in a wild goose chase. Grabbing his leg, the old lady tried hard to grab her handbag but the man gave her a hard push and she landed on the ground with a loud thump.

"Stop the theif! Stop the theif!" I wailed. I failed to notice that they were just fliming as there are televison crews around.

"Hey guys! Why aren't you stopping the theif?" I shouted to the group of on-lookers. They just shrudded their shoulders. Suddenly, a man burst out to a loud laughter. Then, all others burst out laughing, including my family members, the theif and the old lady. Shock robbed me of speech when I discovered that they were Mediacorp artists. The "theif" explanied to me that they were just filming and we had another heartily laugh.

"Hey Janis, new friend!" shouted a voice, I think it must be two voices. I turned around and saw two of my new classmates, Sally and Joanne. They joked that I am indeed humorous.

"Janis, after we had started school, I will introduce my friends to you, there is Rachel, Mary, Sarah, Esther and so on..." explained Joanne. I was indeed grateful that they would introduce their friends to me.

I had just receive calls from my new friends and was looking forward to meet them. Re-opening of school wasn't so dreadful after all.

Tuesday, June 20, 2006

The sky was a delightful expanse of azure blue. Magnolia white clouds floated lazily across the vast blue sky. It was the first week of the June holidays. I had agreed to go to the beach with my friends, Hannah, Jamie, Nicholas and Roy.
After finishing my breakfast, I grabbed my backpack, put on my cap and I set off towards the beach in high-spirits. When I reached my destination, I realised that I was twenty minutes late. I apologized sheepishly, my face beetroot red with embarrassment. After that, we walked towards the palm trees, searching for a shady spot to put down our things…
Finally, we managed to find a shady spot under a big palm tree. We laid out a picnic mat on the sand and put our backpacks on top of it. Hannah, Jamie and I decided to go pick seashells by the sandy shore while Nicholas and Roy went swimming in the sea.
Hannah, Jamie and I talked about everything under the sun while we picked up lots of beautiful seashells. We also picked up the all the rubbish on the shore. Out of the blue, there was an ear-piercing cry. The cry sent ripples of fear down my spine and my heart throbbed with fear. Hannah and Jamie had turned as white as sheet, too. What was that for? Is someone in trouble? Frightened our of our wits by that cry, Hannah and I wanted to go back to the palm tree but Jamie, our Sherlock Holmes wannabe, thought otherwise…
Dragging us by our hands, Jamie walked towards the place where the cry had came from. A small crowd had formed by the time we reached there. A middle-aged woman told us that a man was swimming in the deep waters when he had a leg cramp. Unable to swim, he could only struggle in the water and wave his hands about frantically, hoping that someone will save him. Unfortunately, no one had any experience in saving people, so nobody went to help him, afraid that they may endanger their life as well as the man’s life. Just then, a strong-built man walked towards the crowd. He said that he was a lifeguard in a swimming pool. Without delay, he jumped into the sea and, with powerful strokes, swam towards the man. When the man saw the lifeguard swimming towards him, he stretched out his hand and grabbed the lifeguards arm tightly with his remaining strength. Then, the lifeguard swam towards the shore, pulling the man behind him.
Meanwhile, a lady in the crowd had called for the ambulance. Everybody was crossing their fingers, hoping that everything would be alright.
When the lifeguard and man reached the shore, the lifeguard lent a float from someone and rested the man’s head on it.
“Can everybody not crowd around this lad…He needs air…”the lifeguard requested with a Scottish accent.
Everybody took a few steps backwards. A few moments later, the man coughed out a few gulps of water and he started breathing regularly. Suddenly, the wailing of sirens filled the air. The ambulance! Everyone made way for the paramedics as the paramedics ran towards us with a stretcher. The paramedics laid the man down on the stretcher and rushed back to the ambulance. With its sirens blaring, the ambulance set off towards the hospital.
“Great job, dude!” shouted someone from the crowd when the ambulance left, followed by a spontaneous burst of applause. Some people gave the lifeguard a pat on the shoulder while heaping praises on him. The lifeguard beamed with pride.
Hannah, Jamie and I sprinted back to the shady spot, to find Nicholas and Roy resting under the tree. Hannah started telling them about the incident we had just seen…
“He was so heroic! He was pulling that guy and he could still swim like a fish…” Hannah ‘reported’ with hand gestures, the two boys listening attentively. When Hannah finally finished her ‘story’, the five of us had our lunch of sandwiches, specially made by Roy’s mother. It was delicious!
Time flew! Soon, it was time to say good-bye. We bade each other farewell before heading back home. I went home, on cloud nine, thinking about the great day I had with my friends and wondering what my mother had cooked for dinner…

“I can’t wait to see my Aunt, Mom!” I exclaimed as we reached the Singapore Changi Airport. My aunt Mary was coming to Singapore for a two-week holiday and she would be staying at our house. My whole family, Mother, Father, my brother, Time and I were all very excited as we waited for Aunt Mary to arrive.

“Look, Aunt Mary’s flight SQ123 from America has just landed! And… oh, we are supposed to wait at Arrival Hall 2, Belt 17!” Dad announced as we headed for Arrival Hall 2.

As we approached Belt 17 in Arrival Hall 2, my eyes fell upon something ridiculous – a middle-aged Malay snatching away an old woman’s handbag! ‘God, who would do such a thing in the Singapore Airport? What would tourists think of Singapore? A small pathetic piece of land, with snatch thieves all around you? Even in the airport?’ I thought to myself, unsatisfied.

But all my thoughts were squashed to the very back of my mind, as the very next thing I noticed was – incredible.

I saw two cameramen with a director standing not far away from the “crime scene”. A closer look, I then realized that they were from the MediaCorp! Followed closely, a thought hit me hard in the head. So, they were filming! Wow! You do not see filming going on everywhere you go, this was really unbelievable! Infect, it was cool!

Another closer look, I saw that the old lady whose handbag was being snatched away was one of my favourite actresses – Brenda Song! Amazing! I could not believe my own eyes! I actually saw my favourite actress in real life! I pinched myself on the arm to see if I was dreaming. Ouch! No, I was not dreaming. Wow… … …

Just when I started to “regain consciousness”, Mom called out, “Hey, look! It’s Aunt Mary! Hi!!! Over here!” She sounded even more excited than we kids. I began jumping up and down gleefully.

Man, I was so happy I could see Aunt Mary again. She was such a sporty woman and I knew she would bring me go wakeboarding and stuff. I could not wait!

“Oh, kids, you’ve grown so much since I last saw you all! I missed everyone sooo much!” Aunt Mary said as we hugged each other, almost shedding tears of joy.
After then “hugging-session”, Dad urged us to go, as it was already nightfall.

“No! Not until the crew and the actors leave!” I begged, “Pleeeease?” But Dad simply shook his head and said a firm “No.” So, I tore my eyes away from Brenda Song, and the other crewmembers, reluctantly… …

"Ring........."the school bell rang, signaling the end of the last period.I picked up my bulging schoolbag and made a dash for the gate.It had been a tiring day and all I wanted was a good, long nap on my comfortable bed.I walked quickly back home, unaware of what was in store for me.
The lift gave an awkward jerk when it reached the eighth storey and I paced out of it.Just as I was about to unlock the main door of my house,I heard the voices of two people, two men perhaps.I walked towards the bend leading to the other units and was shocked to see two men who were wearing what seemed to be printed shirts belonging to the elderly standing in front of my neighbour,Mr and Mrs Chan's flat."This does not seem to be the one."a loud, booming voice rang out of the mouth of the man who was struggling with the doorknob of the door, using a bunch of keys.
"What should I do?Mr and Mrs Chan can't be those two wierd looking men there, they have gone to work.If not,who can those two men be?Robbers?"I thought worriedly in my mind.Just then, one of the keys fitted into the doorknob and the two men went into the flat."They must have stolen Mr Chan's keys!"I said out pointedly after the two men had closed the door behind them.Shocked by the scene in front of me,it took me a whole five minutes to decide what to do next,to call the police.
I rushed into my flat, picked up the cordless phone and dialed "999".When someone picked up the receiver on the other end,I began to relate what I had just witnessed to him and ended by telling him my address. In approximately 5 minutes, I heard a knock on my door and immediately began showing the policemen outside my door the way to Mr and Mrs Chan's flat.As I had been taking note of any movement inside the flat through my window,I was very sure that the robbers had not left.
"Crash!"a loud crash was heard when the policemen forced open the door and the door was detached from its hinge.I saw the two men being led out of the house, however, looking puzzled instead of guilty.
"WHAT?Us?Robbers? We have been asked by Mr Chan to pick up the toolbox which he had accidentally left behind in the house due to his hurry to go to work in the morning. There! Our keys here were given by Mr Chan to us personally. We are his workers! "the man wearing the purple printed tee cried out.Knowing that Mr Chan worked as the boss in a small company which helped its customers to fix their worn out furniture,I was not surprised that Mr Chan would need his toolbox while working. However, how did these "robbers"know about Mr Chan's occupation?
After the policemen had given a call to Mr Chan himself, they realised that what the "robbers" said were true. They let the two men,who were looking quite grim, out of their firm grip and went back looking very annoyed.Appologising,I went back into my flat with cheeks as red as tomatoes which had just ripened.I had learnt a very important lesson after making a total clown out of myself,"Always get the facts straight before doing anything rash."

“What are they doing? Are they burglars? Should I call the police? Maybe they are locksmiths?” Questions flooded my mind. I had just reach home from school after a tiring day when I saw two men standing in front of my neighbour, Mr Jones’, flat. One of them was struggling with the door…
The man who was struggling with the door was strong-built, had frizzy black hair and a huge mole on his right cheek. The other man had a dragon tattoo along his left arm and a deep scar on his forehead. Suddenly, I remembered that Mr Jones had gone for a holiday to Japan with his whole family. That meant no one was at home so the two men definitely were not locksmiths! Panic started to engulf me and icy cold fear gripped at my heart. I snapped out of my shock and dashed home.
I slammed the door behind me with a bang and I kicked off my shoes before throwing my bag onto the sofa with a loud thud. Without delay, I picked up the phone and dialled “999”. The person on the other line assured me that the police would arrive soon and asked me to help keep a lookout for the burglars in case they got away, but from a safe distance.
Slowly, I tip-toed towards the door and looked through the peephole, my heart throbbing with fear, afraid that I may make a sound that will alert the burglars. By then, they had managed to pry open the door of Mr Jones’ flat. There was no sign of either of them.
“They must be in the house, stealing everything that was valuable!” I thought to myself. A few minutes later, the two men came out of the house. The strong-built man had a big bag of loot slung over his shoulders. Where were the police? I was like a cat on hot bricks. At the eleventh hour, the police arrived. Immediately, the two me fled, and the police gave chase. The long arms of the law finally caught up with the burglars.
After the police thanked me for helping me catch the burglars, they brought the burglars to the police for questioning. I was on cloud nine when the police officer heaped praises at me.
To commend me for my righteous act, I received a commendation plaque, much to my parents delight.
This incident left an indelible imprint in my mind.

"Ring…!" the school dismissal bell sounded alarmingly as if there was a fire in school. Well, school was over for the day. I stuffed all my textbooks into my bag hurriedly. I could hardly wait to get home to play my new computer game! Just then, my form teacher yelled to me across the classroom, "Ka Chih, meet me at the staffroom five minutes later. I need you to run an errand for me!"
Now I had to wait even longer to get home. I sighed. I dragged myself to the staffroom. As I approached, I heard a sobbing sound. Oh! It was just someone crying away at a corner. But wait! Isn't that John, my best friend?
I abandoned my attempt to enter the locked staffroom door and rushed towards John to check it out. Initially, he just asked me to go away and turned his head away from me. However, as a best friend, I was not going to relent and leave him alone in dire straits. In the end, John sensed my sincerity and poured out his sorrows to me.
John was bullied and the bullies took away his wallet containing his identification card and fifty dollars! "What did you bring so much money to school for?" I asked John in surprise. He said that he was forced by the bullies to steal the money from his parents and pass it to them. "Do you know the bullies’ names?" I asked in concern. John shook his head and broke into tears again.
I suggested informing a teacher but John said that the bullies threatened him not to do so. I persisted and he had no choice but to give in. We entered the staffroom and instantly bumped into my form teacher, Mr Lim. "Where were you in the last fifteen minutes?" he boomed. "This is an emergency, Mr Lim!" I said and explained to him what had happened to John. "There shall be no bullies in this school," Mr Lim bellowed, "do not worry, John, I shall deal with these people when I find them!" For the first time that day, I saw a smile on John’s face.
The next day, during assembly, Mr Lim called the bullies up, although it was not known who they were. "If you do not own up now, a more severe punishment will be carried out if you are caught!" Mr Lim shouted. Three boys slowly stood up and walked towards the stage.
The bullies were punished accordingly and John’s wallet was returned. John said to me, "Thanks for all your help. You are truly my best friend!"

The cameras were rolling, the lights were flashing. I hurriedly slipped on my sunglasses. I tried arranging my hair but one call from the director and I was up. I felt my heart pounding nervously against my ribcage; I swallowed the big lump in my throat and stopped wringing my wrists.

An old lady hobbled across the hall, clasping her purse carelessly by her elbow. She had plastered on a smile and her feet shuffled across the floor. I gulped. Here goes nothing! I walked casually, looking at my watch, adjusting my sunglasses; I was really trying to act my very best. I attempted to look innocent and put on a grin. Then, I tripped.

“CUT!” the director screamed. Everyone in the airport’s arrival hall shifted their stare onto me. I suddenly felt exceptionally self-conscious.

“Sorry, I…” I mumbled.

The old lady glared at me, shooting daggers from her eyes. I turned beetroot red. Here was my one shot at stardom and I got to do it with a grumpy old woman. Now, I made sure my shoelaces were tied tightly and I waited for my turn……

I started strolling, hands jammed into my pockets. I hummed a tune and then, my eyes darted around. Immediately, I headed straight to the old lady. In a swift motion, I snatched her purse away. So far, so good. The old lady yelled in Cantonese but I was already “escaping”, I sprinted away, avoiding the gaze of everyone’s. The old lady put out both her hands and started running in a limping sort of manner. She was huffing and puffing and all her wrinkles were bunched up. I really had to use all my willpower to stop the upending laughter from coming. Then, I tripped. Well, it was part of the script.

Another actor took over the role of the good guy. He grabbed me and twisted my elbow behind me. I yelped and dropped the purse. The old lady picked it up and cradled it like a baby.

“CUT!” the director shouted. “Get some rest guys.”

I nodded. The actor released me and I massaged my arms. Finally, one scene was officially completed!

"Passengers of SQ125, please go to gate 3."Upon hearing the announcement,I pulled my bulging luggage bag along the hard concrete floor, towards gate 3. It was my first time I was going overseas and I was anticipating the flight.
As I made my way, passing by Arrival Hall 2, I was surprised to see a group of camera crew there. As the airport was normally a crowded place, it was very weird to see people filming under the noisy circumstances. Many people were watching the actors and actresses with great interest, obviously as surprised as me.Suddenly, I spotted my favorite actress among the crew."Vanessa Ng.."I thought in my mind while watching the actress getting ready for the next scene. I longed to stay and watch the scene in front of me and cancel my flight. However, I knew that my parents had a hard time trying to save the amount of money needed for this flight to USA and it would be quite ungrateful of me to cancel it just to watch a mere 15 minutes of filming .
Just as I was thinking whether to board the plane or not, I saw a man wearing an old-fashioned printed shirt with a pair of dark sunglasses perched on his sharp nose running away from an old lady with a red handbag in his hand."Help!Help!"the old lady was screaming with all her might. Looking at the calm faces of the people around me,Iwas puzzled that all of them could let this thief run away without standing up to stop him. I was just about to run towards the I saw the large cameras and remembered that it was just the camera crew filming."How forgetful can I be.."
"Passengers of SQ125,please go to gate 3."a loud clear voice filled the entire airport. As though I was a robot whose batteries had just been put in,I ran as fast as I could towards gate 3, leaving the thought of canceling the flight behind.I knew that I would be guilty for the rest of my life if I did that.
As I sat down on the comfortable, classy arm chairs in the airplane, I thought,"How could I ever have thought of missing this once in a lifetime opportunity?"

James was an actor. He loved to act in movies and television shows like thieving, mystery stories and some others. One day, he was asked to act in a show that involved a thieving criminal that was on the lookout for woman carrying expensive handbags.

So it was set. That Saturday morning, the cast and the crew went to the airport and prepared for the filming. "Ready, action!" said the director. The scene began with Alice as the old lady walking along the arrival hall. At that point, James rushed forward, snatched the old lady's bag and ran away. "Stop thief!" shouted the old lady as she chased after James.

Just then, a man making his way to the exit, heard the commotion and looked in that direction. The first thing he saw was a woman chasing a man apparently holding her handbag. He did not notice the cameras as they were in a corner of the hall. He rushed towards James and pinned him to the floor. Soon he became aware of laughter all around him. Instinctively, he turned around and was shocked to see cameras shoved in his face.

Straight away he realised what was happening and feeling embarrassed, he turned to leave the hall when the director came up to him and asked "Would you like to work in our company as an actor?" The man replied without much hesitation "Sure, when do we start?" "How about now?" said the director.

The filming then continued without any major interruptions.

"Ring...ring...!" It was recess time. We rushed out of our classroom like a flock of birds eager to get out of a cage. "Quiet please!" boomed the stern and authoritative voice of Miss Koh, our form teacher and our school's discipline master. "Jun Heng, please follow me to the staffroom after you have finished your food as I need your help to carry some books," she said to me.

After eating a plate of fried noodles, I walked to the staffroom. Just as I was turning the corner to the staffroom, I heard a noise. I stopped in my tracks and listened. Sure enough, I heard another sound, sounding like a sob. Just then, I saw that the storeroom door was slightly ajar.

I walked in and saw a girl, about Primary two sitting on the floor sobbing, with her head resting on a crate. Immediately, I recognized her as my sister, Cindy. On hearing my footsteps, she turned around.

"Cindy, why are you crying?" I asked gently. Still sobbing, she said, "I lost the purse containing the money mum gave me to buy a dictionary." "Don’t worry, maybe someone might pick it up," I said and with those words, I led her out of the storeroom, knowing full well that I would get scolded by Miss Koh, but I felt that I should help my sister.

Just then, Cindy’s best friend, Brenda, came running to us, shouting at the top of her voice. "Hey Cindy, I think I found something belonging to you!" and started waving Cindy's purse in the air. "My purse!" exclaimed Cindy. "Thanks, Brenda."

After saying goodbye to them, I hurried off to the staffroom, where I met a very angry Miss Koh breathing fire. I told her what happened and she forgave me and praised me for helping my sister even when I knew I would get into deep trouble.

"Ring…!" The school dismissal bell rang. Finally, school was over! I was eager to get home to watch the exciting new movie, ‘War’. I was light-footed and skipped with joy all the way home.
I took my flat’s elevator up. It was so slow that sometimes I thought it would be much quicker to take the stairs but nevertheless, I chose the easier way.
"Oh, come on!" I groaned to my self as the lift crawled its way up. "Ding, the tenth storey," the speaker in the lift sounded. As soon as the lift door opened, I dashed out towards my house, passed two men struggling with my neighbour’ door and screeched to a halt just outside my door. I took out my keys and prepared to unlock the door. Wait a minute! Two men banging and fiddling with the lock of my neighbour’s door? That was unusual.
Then I came to my senses. It must be a break-in! I was momentarily shocked and immobilized with fear. I thought, What am I going to do? Should I just mind my own business and watch the movie at home? My decision to act was confirmed by the noisy clatter of my neighbour’s door.
Without a moment’s hesitation, I fished out my old handphone from my pocket and called for the police. Within a few moments, the sirens of police cars rushing to the scene could be heard. As I observed the two men’s every action, I wondered why they did not even budge even though it was clearly noticeable that the police were arriving.
Two policemen appeared around the corner and pointed their pistols threateningly at the two men. "Hands up!" one of them shouted. The two men were stunned. They looked behind to see who the police were arresting. They saw only me clutching my handphone. "He stole a handphone?" they asked in unison. Then, they rushed up to me and held me captive. "We’ve got him!"
"Cut the act, you guys were trying to break into that house!" the policeman shouted. "That…that’s my house!" one of my ‘captors’ said.
After a short explanation, we all understood what was going on. The man was really the owner of the house, although I did not recognize him at first. The other was a locksmith who was trying to pick the stuck lock all along!
We burst into squeals of laughter. As I stepped into my house giggling, I stopped immediately.
I had missed half of the movie for nothing!!!

"Ring....."the recess bell rang.Everyone were grinning from ear to ear upon hearing the loud, booming ring of the bell."Everyone but me..."I thought gloomily. My teacher had been dissatisfied with my english composition and had requested to see me during recess.
I dragged my feet heavily along the ground, dreading the thought of the all for my own good nagging I was going to get from my long-winded teacher, Mdm Tan.As I walked along the narrow corridor towards the staffroom, not a sound could be heard. The peace just made me feel worse.Suddenly,a long eerie wail filled the corridor.Just hearing it sent shivers down my spine.
"Sob..Sob..."the sound came again. This time,my curiousity was aroused."WHAT CAN IT BE?"the same thought kept flashing in my mind.I made my way towards the shelves and was shocked to see my friend,Karen, sobbing at the end of the line of shelves."Karen, what's wrong?"I asked in a concerned voice, the meeting with Mdm Tan slowly edging its way out of my mind. With her head down,Karen told me that her parents had just divorced and the impact on her after their divorce was unbearable.Karen said that she had already known that her parents were going to divorce judging sooner or later judging by the dry relationship between them nowadays."I just did not expect so soon.."Karen finished between more sobs.
I comforted Karen and told her that no matter what happens, she would always have us friends with her.Looking slightly better,Karen stood up and rubbed away her tears."Kathleen, you are the best friend I have ever had."Karen said and I was relieved to see a tiny grin creeping up on her face. After that, she went off.
"Oh no!"I said a little too loudly and quickly ran into the staff room. However, I was surprised to see Mdm Tan smiling at me instead of the ugly frown I had been expecting from her."I heard you helped Karen overcome the impact of her parents divorce. You have done well,Kathleen.Karen has not been herself for the past few days."Mdm Tan complimented me and sent me off with not a punishment but a Mars Bar to make up for the recess I missed!
"Indeed, all had turned well."I thought as I paced up to my classroom. When my classmates asked me what punishment from Mdm Tan, I just looked at them and smiled. This was a secret between me,Karen and Mdm Tan,I was NEVER going to divulge it.Done By:Kimberly Ng

"Gnaw! Gnaw!" my friends and I conversed as we flapped our purely, creamy, puffy white feathers across the shimmering , ever-deepening navy blue sea. We were here to catch our preys; the unluckly fishes who swam to the shore. "Gnaw!" I bellowed with my might to all those other seagulls who had come to fight with us for food. They were flying towards the shore, where seashells, starfishes and crabs werempving on the man-made, sunny-yellow sand. My groep of friends fldw towards the clif above the shore and waited patiently for our preys. But instead, a group of teenagers nwere claded in their colourful swim-shorts, going to have a splash in the cooling seawater. That will chase our preys away! I stared at them with my birdy-eyes, watching every movement they made.
"Come on, Nike, don't be a loser!" Then, a blond-haired teenager dragged his feet along the shore towards the sea; letting those tiny sand particles through his toes. He seemed reluctant but did not want to be teased, so he came upfront with his other friends.
First shallow, then deeper and deeper, they went and Nike just followed behind like a duckling following its mother. Then, suddenly, I saw Nike waving his hands frantically. "he was having quite a lot of fun, eh?" I thought. Then, Nike waved his ahnds again, this time with difficulty. I stared away in disgust but his friends, who saw Nike in trouble, swam and carried him ashore. Nike was panic-stricken and his face turned ghostly-white; his legs looked numb.
By the time Nike reached shore, he was semi-conscious. I blinked my eyes in fascination. Al, of Nike's friends crowded around, offering their help. Then, a boy who knew Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation stepped upfront and helped Nike. Slowly, one dirp, two drip of water flowed out of Nike's mouth. He opened is eyes carefully and slowly and looked up. Just then, an ambulance which one of Nike's friends called arrived and Nike was tranferred to the hospital with the accompany os all his friends....
I sa a fish and swopped doen, bit the fish and slowly digested it and waited for more....

Everything was as normal except this was the first show I was going to film. I felt butterflies in my stomach as I walked towards the biulding, named 'Mediacorp'. I had watched breath-taking shows aired by Mediacorp Studoius but never imagined that it was going to be my turn on television. I straightened my poisture and continued walking.
Not long after, I saw a mini-bus, with crews, photographer, hair-dresser. The director waved and instructed me to come over quickly for the making-up. "Give a good impression." I kept reminding myself. Soon, I was setteled doen after changing into a set of sponsored clothes for the make-up. I smiled into the 'attracting' mirror before imaginning myself on television. Relatives, friends and family members would stare admiringly at me, anticipating to go on television too. "Done!" announced the hair dresser and all the actors climbed onto the van with helpers helping, I was no exception. Scenery consisting of tall buildings, factories, schools, highways past me like am swift of the wind. All of my colledges were memorising thier scripts at the last minute while I was staring blankly into the outside world. Before I realised it, we were arriving at our destination, Changi Airport for the scene of the robbery. The crews unpacked their items like a juguar catching its prey while the actors strolled like tortises crossing the road to the arrival hall.
The consistant afternoon heat was irratating everyone and umbrellas were opened up to block it. "Ahh...Thanks!' An umbrella too, sheltered me from the 'inhuman' heat. Not long after battling with the heat, the coldness of the air-conditioner from the arrival-hall struck my face; I was in the arrival hall at last! The director ushered us quickly to the filming location and we sprang into action without any prompting once the director said "Action!". One of my male colledge pretended to snatch my handbag and I was chasing after him. We ran for a distance after a final word "CUT" was said. Both of us, actors were relieved as we need not replay the scene. Tourists, locals and passres-by stopped their paces and stared at us during the filming and chatted among themselves.
All of the crew, including the director rested for a while before unpacking and moving onto the other location. I was again ushered out into the 'hell'. which is the putside of Changi Airport and to our van. Soon, the fast-handed crews had finished their 'tasks' and climbed onto the van for another upcoming 'task'. Our van soon started with all the person in it dozing off, memorising scripts and talking....

It was the last day of school. I walked home at a leisurely pace, kicking a stone as I went, occasionally stopping to avoid a friendly feline. Birds chirped and flew away after eating their fill from the park.
I reached my block of flats and waited for the lift. The doors groaned as they moved open. After I reached my floor, I walked to my house door equipped with an electric lock, guarding against intruders from going in.
Just as I was opening my door, I heard a few noises behind me. Turning around, I saw two men in black fiddling with my neighbors' door. Almost immediately, I sensed that something was wrong as I knew my neighbors were away as they had recently won a trip to the United States of America. If my neighbors were in the U.S.A., then who are these people trying to get in?
Slowly, I opened my door, stopping at every sound and hoping that those two men did not hear the sounds my gate made. They were most probably too engrossed in what they were doing. After closing the door, I crept into the sitting room and dialed the police hotline and told them what was happening. They told me to keep an eye on the men and hung up after assuring me that they would be there shortly.
I stayed behind the door, watching the men through the peephole and hoping that they would not give up and leave before the police come. Fortunately, they seemed to be persistent as they did not do so.
Less than five minutes later, the wailing of sirens could be heard. The two men began to run towards the lift and started pressing the lift button frantically upon reaching it. When the doors opened, the men got a fine shock when policemen came out of the lift. My neighbors were also informed.
A few days later, my neighbors came home. They thanked us profusely and presented us with lots of goodies and delicacies from the U.S.A. It was a happy day for us and a good deed done.

The sun shone mercilessly on my back while I trudged back home from school. When I came out of the lift, unusual noises attracted my attention. I walked towards it and saw two men standing outside my neighbour’s flat. At that point in time, I still could not make out what they were doing. But after taking a closer look, I knew exactly what in the world they were doing. They were actually struggling with the door! They wanted to break in! I was terribly shocked. It was then that I had the idea of stopping them. How could I stand her and let the robbers break into my neighbour’s flat? But then I hesitated. Questions mushroomed in my mind. Who am I to stop them? I am not armed with any sort of weapons what if they have guns, or even knives?
Suddenly, I heard the sound of people breaking into a flat. Oh no I thought. They must have broken into my neighbour’s flat! I could not hesitate any longer. I called for the police using a public phone at the void deck of my block. Next, I went into my neighbour’s flat and tried to stop them from escaping by distracting them.
“Stop what you are doing now!” I shouted at the two robbers. They turned around and saw me.They shoot me a stern look. Then I had the shock of my life. One of them took out a pistol and he aimed at me. I felt like an idiot at that point in time. I should have just called the police and waited for them to come! But it was too late, I had no choice but to stand there and wait for the police to come. “I’m going to shoot you if u don’t go out right now,” said the other robber. He pointed the pistol at me and got ready to shoot me. I felt very frightened at that time and when he was about to shoot, I heard the sirens of the police car. The robbers were scared. They called me to move away but I refused as I knew the policemen were about to come and arrest them. “Move away now!” the two robbers shouted. I still refused. “I’m asking you the last time. Are you moving away?” I still refused. Then, he pointed the pistol at me and was about to shoot. Suddenly, the policemen rushed in! They arrested the two robbers and commented me for my quick reaction.

Gazing at my badly scarred skin and face at the mirror, I could not help but look back at the day when that unforgettable disaster struck. The terrible experience that made me regret that I was born into this world. The slightest thought of it made me shed a tear.

Mother had told me about this day of undescribable horror a couple of times before and maybe more when I was young, although I had no impression of that nerve-wrecking tragedy. But till today, the words that Mother told me still stayed strongly vivid in my mind.

It all happened fifteen years ago, when I was just an eight-month-old infant. It was awfully late as it was in the middle of the night and Father, Mother and I were sleeping in the bedroom as soundly as dead pigs. I could probably be sucking my thumb contentedly, like what Mother told me, like every other typical night. We were blissfully in our dreams then, only to be rudely awaken by an ear-piercing scream that almost shattered the windows of our house, followed by a deafening loud crash that shook the ground. Father and Mother woke up in an instant, only to be blinded by the cluster of thick, dark smoke that clouded the whole room. Not far away, tongues of red-orange flame could be seen licking greedily near the door of the bedroom. Loud shrieks and screeches for help pierced the air. There was a fire going on!

Father and Mother immediately jolted out of bed, kicking the bedsheet away and rushing out of the room, coughing and wheezing incessantly as they left the house. Alas, out of panic, they have forgotten about their beloved baby daughter: Me. At that time, I was still asleep in my dreams then, totally ignorant of the happenings around me. I only came to when the ceiling came crashing down and starting wailing at the sight of darkness and cloudy smoke. I felt very insecure and I could not see a thing.

Meanwhile, one of the residents telephoned the fire brigade for help. In a matter of minutes, the fire brigade arrived, followed by a trail of whirring police cars. A group of firemen launched high ladders and rolled out long hoses, zapping a jet of water at the blazing flat, while the other firemen scouted the building in search for residents who, in chance, might still be left in their houses. The policemen did their part too, calming the chaotic residents down and keeping order.

Fortunately, a fireman spotted me among the blazing fire and hurried to pick me up from the cradle. By that time, the fire had already burnt numeral areas of my skin. We both escaped from the building in the nick of time. As soon as we got out from the house, the building went up in smoke. The fire had incinerated everything in sight. Many corpses were charred beyond recognition.

I was eventually returned to the secure arms of my weeping mother. However, the burns I got were tattooed on my skin, and became scars as I grew up.

That was what happened to me. I would never erase that horrifying catastrophe from my mind, and it has been etched in my memory till today.

"Where is it? Faster! Are you sure he had put it in this pocket?" my friend, Aaron, urged me as he wiped away beads of cold sweat that rolled down his freckled face. We were in the classroom during recess, rummaging through our friend, Tony's bag for his new Gameboy.
Tony had brought his new Gameboy to school secretly and shown it to his close friends in a corner at the school canteen, not realising that Aaron and I were walking past. The Gameboy did not escape our attention. We had wanted that Gameboy for a long time. We knew that this was our chance. We decided to spring into action during recess, when not a single soul would be in sight.
Finally, after what seemed like eternity, I found the Gameboy, which was hidden in a secret compartment of the bag. Swift as wind, i stuffed it into my back pocket. Then, we walked out of the classroom casually to assemble at the basketball court after recess.
What a close shave! We heaved a huge sigh of relief as we walked out to the basketball court, thinking we had got off scot-free. Just then, i felt a tap on my shoulder. My first instinct was to run! Unfortunately, the hand grabbed me tightly by my collar. I looked beside me; Aaron had met with the same fate as me, too. Tentatively, we looked behind us. To our horror, it was our form teacher, Mr Tay! Are we being caught red-handed?
"What is that thing bulging out of your pocket?" asked Mr Tay, noticing the Gameboy that was bulging out of my pocket. Filled with trepidation, I pulled out the Gameboy from my pocket and handed it to Mr Tay with my trembling hands.
"What is this?" Mr Tay asked Aaron and I. Our lips formed the words though our voice did not spoke them. By then, a small crowd of pupils had gathered around us, looking and pointing at us. Our face turned beetroot with embarrassment.
Out of the blue, someone shouted from the crowd shouted, "Hey, that is mine!". Everybody gasped in shock. As a result, Aaron and I, together with Tony, were sent to the principal's office. Aaron and I were reprimanded for stealing Tony's belongings. We were let off with a stern warning. We also got detention and a written letter to our parents. After apologising profusely to Tony, we went back to class.
As for Tony, his Gameboy was confiscated by our discipline mistress, Mdm Lee, as it was against the school rules to bring electronic devices to school.
This incident will forever be etched in my memory. Till now, I can still remember every single thing that happened that day, even the details...

It was one of the typical afternoon, which I walked home from school under the scorching sun. But when I reached my doorstep, i visualized something that was not at all typical: two men were standing in front of my neighbour, Mrs Tan's flat, and one of them was srruglling with the door. He had a special tool in his hand.

It suddenly dawned on mt that the two men were theives! They were trying to pick Mrs Tan's fonr door's lock so that they cioudl get in and steal all her valuaable! My heart was beating fast. My mind was racing.i did not know what to do.

Then i stared at the two men, one of them was wearing a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt while the other, who was picking the lock, wore a blue t-shrt and also a pair of jeans and he had a cap on. By their looks, they did looked like theives. But as the saying oes, "Do not judge a book by its cover."

I was really confused. Part my my mind told me toplbuck up my courage and stop the thieves whoike the other part stopped me from thinging them as thieves.

Finally, i dedcided. A smile flashed across my face as i thought about my plan. It was such anm ingenious one.

I went tinto my house, grabbed some huge ice cubes, then rushed backonto the corridor. I placed the ice cubes carefully in a straight line acroo s the corridor. Now, I just had to wait for the loud "BAM!" or "AWWW!" or "OUCH!!!" or "WOOO-WOOOAAOOHHH!". i wen tback into the house gain/

"Well, they could steal all they want but at last... heehe...." I thought ed to myself satisfiedly. I simply could not wait for the loud noise.

After waiting for what seemed like eternity to me, i finally heard the loud "OOOUUUUUUCH!" and "Woooo- woooaooh!" i flew to the door, opened it, and saw something that i had both expected and unexpected. The expected part was that the two thieves and fall onto the ground becauser of the ice cubes. Both rugginf the heads and butts, graoning in pain. But the unbexpected part (and disappointing) part was, therer were not any valuable nor jewels nor anything strewn onto the corridor! there were also no huge bags which carried valuaable. There was only a toolbox.

Maybe... maybe they wer e not thieves after all!

"Oh no!" I sighed , as i slammed my forehead hard.

"Hey, gir;, would you mind helping us up? we slipped on the ice cubes, see? Whoever is so inconsiderate?" said the man in the blue t-shirt, pointing at those ice cubes which i had placed ealire on. I suddenly felt a gush of guiltiness throughme. I I felt my face burn, with embarressment as i helped them up. Out of the blue, this phrase : Honesty is the best policy" came popping into my mind.

"Sorry," i muttered." I'm soo sorry..."

"What d'ya mean when you say you're sorry?" he said angrily, aand as if he knew what i was thinking, he continued, "You're not going to tell me that we should thank you for all these slipping and falling, right?" he demanded.

"Well, yes, i did it, it's my fault," I said again, lips barely moving" I'm sorry."

The two man looked at me, hoping for an explanation, so i continued, ":see, i saw you two struggling at my neighbour's door, so i thought you were... were... thieves. So i set up this trick, see? But i had not expected you to be... By the way, who ayre ayou?" I asked suddenly, thinking that I had beed taling to strangers all the while.

"Oh, we're locksmiths," They answered together,m smiling. "Mrs Tan's lock was spoiled so she made an appointment with us +so that we could come and repair it!"

Oh!@ why had not i thought of it in the first place? Now i have to face the music...

Just at this time, I heard MrsVoice.

"Hey guys! On Jane, you're here too! Look what I've bought for you!" I was not in the mood. I've caused all these trouble and, i was supposed to get a "gift" from Mrs Tan? No. I told my firmly. I had to tell Mrs Tan about this whole incident.
So i did.
"Oh... I see... Well, we can't really put the blame on you, my dear... After all, these two men really does look like thieevse" Mrs tan sad consolingly.

The lcoksmiths stared at Mrs Tan with hands on their waist, then, everyone busrt out laughing, together.

It was such an embarrassing but memorable event, abd i had also learnt a lesson: never judge a book by its cover, the same goes for humans!

It was a cool afternoon. Trees were swaying to the gentle breeze, leaves rustled adn the wind blew gently on my hair. I was on my way home from school. While sauntering down the pavement, I was humming a jubilant tune and was relaxing myself from a hard day at school. That was my way to relieve stress.

Upon reaching my destination, I unlocked the front door adn walked in. I opened the fridge to get a can of cola to quench my thirst when I heard noises coming from my neighbour, Mr Lam's flat.

"Bang! Bang! Bonk! Bonk! was the sound which shattered the peaceful ambience.

"Whats cropping up there? Mr Lam was at work. Who could be there?" I wondered.

Out of curiosity, I peeped from the peephole and discovered two masked man standing in front of the door. One of them was struggling with the door, trying to break the lock with tools.

"Hey Tan! Lend a hand lah!" exclaimed one man

"Do it youself lah Chong! Don't know what D.I.Y is har?" retorted Tan.

I grabbed my notebook and noted down their appearances. Meanwhile, their attempt to break the lock wa successful and they darted into the house with two big bags and ransacking for valuables.

Instantly, I grabbed the telephone and dialed for the police. I gave them a detailed description of the robbery. The police told me not to do anything but keep a close look-out.

I prayed hard for the police to arrive and waited inpatiently. No siren. No police. Then, a brillant idea flashed into my mind-lock the robbers inside the flat.

Immediately, I rushed into the house to get a spare lock. While the robbers were busy ransacking the house and failed to notice me, I darted across the gate and locked it. Then, I informed Mr Lam about the robbery at his workplace.

After moments, the wailing of sirens could be heard. The police, together with Mr Lam, arrive at the scene of crime.

I took the key and unlock the grill gate and the police darted in. Shock robbed the robbers for speech. Tan was too stunned to escape and was arrested by the police. Chong jumped down from the window which was previously preyed open and escaped.

Fortunately, I had the appearance and description of Chong. I gave my notebook to the police to find the suspect. I was also called by the police to assist in the investigation.

After days, I was called by the police to identify Chong. A row of suspect was placed in a postion where I could see their face but they couldn't see mine.

"Take your time to identify Chong..." said the officer

I looked at each of them closely and discovered a man. He has long beard, big buttock, short and fat.

"He is Chong sir..." I told the officer.

Chong was arrested and was sent for questioning. Meanwhile, I was praised by the officer.

"Hey, girl! Thank you!" shouted my neighbour Mr Lam when I reached home.

Although his flat was in chaos, nothing was missing as the loot was recovered. He was very thankful and heaped praises on me.

"classes, tuitions, supplementaries...My god! what ...the ...heck...created them!So...Stupid!" I cursed aloud as I climbed up the stairs. The sweltering heat was getting on my nerves and I was panting like a bull when I reached the tenth floor, my house. My anger of the lift breaking down had not subsided yet classes, tuitions issues came to irritate me.

I dragged my feet unwillingly towards my doorstep. that's when I saw two strangers...Burly, macho ones outside my neighbour's flat behaving like a mouse stealing cheese. One of them was struggling with the door while the other was blocking my view to see what the world was happening. "Oh great! Lost their keys again!" I could not bother much in this weather and turned left to my house.

I on the air-conditioner and took a cold shower once in the house. "wha..." I was enjoying the coldness of life; water seemed like snow, peltering down my body onto the floor when ... a sudden thought struck me. It was about my neighnour. "what if 'they' were murderers? will my neighbours die? What if..." Thousands of questions seemed to pop up in my head at one time. I ended my activities in the twinkle of an eye, wore my shirt and dashed out of my house without locking the door. By the time I was at my neighbour's step, everything seemed as normal as it could be and I strolled back to my house.

"Fancy scaring myself in broad daylight!bother!" I reproached myself and went to sleep. I was so unaware of my surrounding until..."Knock! Knock, knock, knock!" I jumped up suddenly. WIthout my brain telling me what to do, I went outside and opened the main door....

I stood rooted to the ground with mouth like a goldfish;opened and closed. It... was the two burly men! They stood in front of me, staring. Not long after, they started talking.

"Where's your neighbours? The bigger-built man demanded."I ...don't know." "What... you want?" I quivered. Both of them took out an address which uncannily matched my neighbour's. After that, one man claimed that they were cousins from Malaysia who came and visited my neighbour."As my niece is out, she asked us to look after our grandmother. I finally got some "clearness" of the situation." We were scarec that our grandmother, which is your neighbour might meet with some mishap as there was not a mouse squeaking inside, so we tried to pick the lock." After all that explanation, they asked in scrutenisation; where is your neighbour

Just then, an elderly lady climbed up the stairs... I recognised her at the first sight. I pointed to the feeble lady. The burly men turned their 'watermelon' heads and went up to help her.

Before going into my neighbour's house, they winked at me, probably to say 'thanks'. After the 'show' ended, I went to my 'dream world' again....

I picked up the cigarette butts with a pair of tongs and tossed them into the black plastic bag, which was in my other hand. A dark memory came into view as I stared at the long, ugly scar, which winded its way from my lower arm to my shoulder...
It was the last day of the seventh month and I was at home, doing my weekend homework. I was about to finish my homework when suddenly, the stench of burnt paper overwhelmed me. As it was the last day of the seventh month, there was sure to be people burning incense, so, I took no notice of the pungent smell. However, the peace was broken when loud cries for help echoed in the air around me. I immediately ran out of the room. "Ah!"I cried out when I tripped over the rubber ball just outside the room. I scrambled to my feet and opened the door, planning to get out of the building as soon as possible.
However, I was shocked when I saw the flames licking up the door. I was trapped! Running to the window, I saw people crowding around my flat. It seemed like I was the only one not out of the burning building. It seemed like eternity as I waited for the fire brigade. " Bam!" a loud sound rang in my ears as the main door crashed on the ground. A wail could be heard around me. A baby! I ran out of the house, disregarding the flames, which badly burnt my arms. Seeing the baby lying on the ground, I quickly scooped him up. I heard the siren of the fire truck and then a loud "whoosh" as a strong gush of water extinguished the fire. A fireman took the baby from my hands and ran out to put him down before coming in for me. The next thing I knew, I had collapsed.
When I awoke, I was in the hospital. My parents surrounded me, their faces looked as if they had not slept for days. They told me that I had fainted due to inhaling too much of smoke. "The fire started from our neighbour's house and spread towards the other houses. It all started from a still ignited cigarette butt. As you know, Mr Tan has always been a careless smoker." my mother said, with a ghastly-looking face.
As I awoke from my daze, I looked away from the scar that was left on my arm after the fire. I continued my job as a cleaner, picking up the cigarette butts, with a look of disgust on my face.
