It was one of the typical afternoon, which I walked home from school under the scorching sun. But when I reached my doorstep, i visualized something that was not at all typical: two men were standing in front of my neighbour, Mrs Tan's flat, and one of them was srruglling with the door. He had a special tool in his hand.

It suddenly dawned on mt that the two men were theives! They were trying to pick Mrs Tan's fonr door's lock so that they cioudl get in and steal all her valuaable! My heart was beating fast. My mind was racing.i did not know what to do.

Then i stared at the two men, one of them was wearing a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt while the other, who was picking the lock, wore a blue t-shrt and also a pair of jeans and he had a cap on. By their looks, they did looked like theives. But as the saying oes, "Do not judge a book by its cover."

I was really confused. Part my my mind told me toplbuck up my courage and stop the thieves whoike the other part stopped me from thinging them as thieves.

Finally, i dedcided. A smile flashed across my face as i thought about my plan. It was such anm ingenious one.

I went tinto my house, grabbed some huge ice cubes, then rushed backonto the corridor. I placed the ice cubes carefully in a straight line acroo s the corridor. Now, I just had to wait for the loud "BAM!" or "AWWW!" or "OUCH!!!" or "WOOO-WOOOAAOOHHH!". i wen tback into the house gain/

"Well, they could steal all they want but at last... heehe...." I thought ed to myself satisfiedly. I simply could not wait for the loud noise.

After waiting for what seemed like eternity to me, i finally heard the loud "OOOUUUUUUCH!" and "Woooo- woooaooh!" i flew to the door, opened it, and saw something that i had both expected and unexpected. The expected part was that the two thieves and fall onto the ground becauser of the ice cubes. Both rugginf the heads and butts, graoning in pain. But the unbexpected part (and disappointing) part was, therer were not any valuable nor jewels nor anything strewn onto the corridor! there were also no huge bags which carried valuaable. There was only a toolbox.

Maybe... maybe they wer e not thieves after all!

"Oh no!" I sighed , as i slammed my forehead hard.

"Hey, gir;, would you mind helping us up? we slipped on the ice cubes, see? Whoever is so inconsiderate?" said the man in the blue t-shirt, pointing at those ice cubes which i had placed ealire on. I suddenly felt a gush of guiltiness throughme. I I felt my face burn, with embarressment as i helped them up. Out of the blue, this phrase : Honesty is the best policy" came popping into my mind.

"Sorry," i muttered." I'm soo sorry..."

"What d'ya mean when you say you're sorry?" he said angrily, aand as if he knew what i was thinking, he continued, "You're not going to tell me that we should thank you for all these slipping and falling, right?" he demanded.

"Well, yes, i did it, it's my fault," I said again, lips barely moving" I'm sorry."

The two man looked at me, hoping for an explanation, so i continued, ":see, i saw you two struggling at my neighbour's door, so i thought you were... were... thieves. So i set up this trick, see? But i had not expected you to be... By the way, who ayre ayou?" I asked suddenly, thinking that I had beed taling to strangers all the while.

"Oh, we're locksmiths," They answered together,m smiling. "Mrs Tan's lock was spoiled so she made an appointment with us +so that we could come and repair it!"

Oh!@ why had not i thought of it in the first place? Now i have to face the music...

Just at this time, I heard MrsVoice.

"Hey guys! On Jane, you're here too! Look what I've bought for you!" I was not in the mood. I've caused all these trouble and, i was supposed to get a "gift" from Mrs Tan? No. I told my firmly. I had to tell Mrs Tan about this whole incident.
So i did.
"Oh... I see... Well, we can't really put the blame on you, my dear... After all, these two men really does look like thieevse" Mrs tan sad consolingly.

The lcoksmiths stared at Mrs Tan with hands on their waist, then, everyone busrt out laughing, together.

It was such an embarrassing but memorable event, abd i had also learnt a lesson: never judge a book by its cover, the same goes for humans!
