"Ring…!" The school dismissal bell rang. Finally, school was over! I was eager to get home to watch the exciting new movie, ‘War’. I was light-footed and skipped with joy all the way home.
I took my flat’s elevator up. It was so slow that sometimes I thought it would be much quicker to take the stairs but nevertheless, I chose the easier way.
"Oh, come on!" I groaned to my self as the lift crawled its way up. "Ding, the tenth storey," the speaker in the lift sounded. As soon as the lift door opened, I dashed out towards my house, passed two men struggling with my neighbour’ door and screeched to a halt just outside my door. I took out my keys and prepared to unlock the door. Wait a minute! Two men banging and fiddling with the lock of my neighbour’s door? That was unusual.
Then I came to my senses. It must be a break-in! I was momentarily shocked and immobilized with fear. I thought, What am I going to do? Should I just mind my own business and watch the movie at home? My decision to act was confirmed by the noisy clatter of my neighbour’s door.
Without a moment’s hesitation, I fished out my old handphone from my pocket and called for the police. Within a few moments, the sirens of police cars rushing to the scene could be heard. As I observed the two men’s every action, I wondered why they did not even budge even though it was clearly noticeable that the police were arriving.
Two policemen appeared around the corner and pointed their pistols threateningly at the two men. "Hands up!" one of them shouted. The two men were stunned. They looked behind to see who the police were arresting. They saw only me clutching my handphone. "He stole a handphone?" they asked in unison. Then, they rushed up to me and held me captive. "We’ve got him!"
"Cut the act, you guys were trying to break into that house!" the policeman shouted. "That…that’s my house!" one of my ‘captors’ said.
After a short explanation, we all understood what was going on. The man was really the owner of the house, although I did not recognize him at first. The other was a locksmith who was trying to pick the stuck lock all along!
We burst into squeals of laughter. As I stepped into my house giggling, I stopped immediately.
I had missed half of the movie for nothing!!!
