I picked up the cigarette butts with a pair of tongs and tossed them into the black plastic bag, which was in my other hand. A dark memory came into view as I stared at the long, ugly scar, which winded its way from my lower arm to my shoulder... It was the last day of the seventh month and I was at home, doing my weekend homework. I was about to finish my homework when suddenly, the stench of burnt paper overwhelmed me. As it was the last day of the seventh month, there was sure to be people burning incense, so, I took no notice of the pungent smell. However, the peace was broken when loud cries for help echoed in the air around me. I immediately ran out of the room. "Ah!"I cried out when I tripped over the rubber ball just outside the room. I scrambled to my feet and opened the door, planning to get out of the building as soon as possible. However, I was shocked when I saw the flames licking up the door. I was trapped! Running to the window, I saw people crowding around my flat. It seemed like I was the only one not out of the burning building. It seemed like eternity as I waited for the fire brigade. " Bam!" a loud sound rang in my ears as the main door crashed on the ground. A wail could be heard around me. A baby! I ran out of the house, disregarding the flames, which badly burnt my arms. Seeing the baby lying on the ground, I quickly scooped him up. I heard the siren of the fire truck and then a loud "whoosh" as a strong gush of water extinguished the fire. A fireman took the baby from my hands and ran out to put him down before coming in for me. The next thing I knew, I had collapsed. When I awoke, I was in the hospital. My parents surrounded me, their faces looked as if they had not slept for days. They told me that I had fainted due to inhaling too much of smoke. "The fire started from our neighbour's house and spread towards the other houses. It all started from a still ignited cigarette butt. As you know, Mr Tan has always been a careless smoker." my mother said, with a ghastly-looking face. As I awoke from my daze, I looked away from the scar that was left on my arm after the fire. I continued my job as a cleaner, picking up the cigarette butts, with a look of disgust on my face.
